First… Freddie. Sorry. I just have to correct it. The man himself had a hard time resisting anger when someone would spell it that way, so I’ll do him a kindness.

I think the real question is if ANYONE is worthy of living up to the iconic Freddie Mercury. Since this is a movie blog, I DO think the oft-speculated casting of Sasha Baron Cohen in a Queen biopic would actually work surprisingly well. I actually side with him or even Russell Brand as being fit to play that part. As we have learned stateside, comedians can do surprisingly well when given a chance to play legendary musicians (Jamie Foxx in RAY, whose performance I still find to be pitch perfect).

But, that wasn’t the question. You must be a friend who knows my deep love for all things Queen. :) If any one musician is capable of living up to the charisma and energy of Freddie Mercury, Adam Lambert would be a fair choice. He is already an extravagant showman. His vocal range is perfect for some of the more difficult Queen songs. Brian May and Roger Taylor both approve of him. Right now, it sounds like he will be performing with them for one show (and even that hasn’t been confirmed just yet) instead of actually taking over as lead singer. If it’s taking over for a tour, that, too, would be just fine. When May and Taylor went out with Paul Rodgers of Free and Bad Company, the tour was a success, critically and financially. I know that if they played anywhere near me, I would fork over the amount for a chance to see them. I was moved to tears by a Queen cover band a few years ago. Imagine the ball of ugly I’d be if I got to see the two guys still in it!

So… short answer. No one will ever live up to Freddie Mercury, but I support Queen’s decision, if it happens, to take on Adam Lambert.
