5. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (directed by David Fincher; written by Steve Zallian; based upon the novel by Stieg Larsson)
Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker.
The film alone is your standard procedural thriller. This is something that starts with the source material. Steig Larsson’s international bestseller delivers a fine story, but doesn’t do anything too original to change the genre. However, the strength of Larsson’s work lies in its edgy heroine, Lisbeth Salander. Rooney Mara’s Salander is intoxicating. Mara brings a sense of vulnerability mixed with great strength and self-reliance to a very scrutinized role. Noomi Repace received numerous accolades when she brought the character to life in the Swedish film series. The strength she brought to the role differs greatly from Mara’s, making both characterizations extremely relevant and interesting. Which version is preferred will be an issue of constant debate, but my money is on Fincher’s stylized vision with excellent performances across the board.
